PHNOM PENH, April 30, 2024 — The Terrace of the Elephants, an ancient platform within the Angkor Archaeological Park, is slated for completion by the end of 2024. The restoration, which began in late 2021, is being managed by the APSARA National Authority in collaboration with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation (KCHF).
The project focuses on two key sections of the terrace: a 20-meter segment on the north side (location A) and a 15-meter portion on the south side (location C). Seang Sophany, an archaeologist and technical team member from the Department of Conservation of Monuments and Preventive Archaeology, noted that work at location A is almost complete, including archaeological excavations and the reconstruction of the collapsed upper sections. The team has also extended repairs to the floor and reinforced the foundation to prevent future water damage.
Prum Tithchhapanrith, another member of the conservation team, mentioned that 90 percent of the restoration work, aimed at preserving the original architectural integrity, has been achieved. Current efforts are focused on installing a new drainage system and re-arranging the upper floor and Naga balustrades based on recommendations from ICC-Angkor experts.
The completion of this project will mark a significant milestone in the preservation of Cambodia's cultural heritage, ensuring the Terrace of the Elephants can be enjoyed by future generations.
